Mela Sarkar is interested in the linguistic integration of immigrants, particularly within the urban context of Montreal where she is conducting a research project on the blending of languages in Montreal rap since 2002. She is also studying issues related to linguistic marginalization in general. Mela seeks to understand and to explain the tensions and the interactions between majority and minority languages in Montreal, but also among First Nations’ communities in Quebec.
